Karnataka High Court asks top cop to decide on access to Gandhi memorial on hotel premises
BENGALURU: The high court on Monday gave the police commissioner 12 weeks to decide whether to allow entry to Gandhi memorial, which is now located on the premises of a luxury hotel on Kumara Krupa Road.
A division bench comprising acting chief justice L Narayana Swamy and Justice PS Dinesh Kumar gave the direction while disposing of a public interest litigation filed by Samarpana, a Bengaluru-based cultural and social organisation.
The memorial was built to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to the city in 1927. Gandhi had conducted a public meeting at the venue. There is also a tree called Jyoti Vriksh where Gandhi held a prayer meeting. Both are now part of Hotel Lalit Ashok.
In their petition, the trust has claimed that as Hotel Lalit Ashok has taken over the property where the memorial stands, there are instances of clashes between the hotel security personnel and the general public.
The petitioner had further stated that till date no action has been taken despite giving representation to the chief minister and city police commissioner on August 7, 2018 and no steps have been taken to allow the public to visit the memorial without hindrance.
Hotel Ashok, which was run by Centre’s India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), was leased to a private hotel group about a decade ago by the Union tourism ministry.
