Cops form one more team to nab bank heist burglars
Trichy rural superintendent of police Zia Ul Haq intensified the investigation by pressing the six teams into action to zero in on the offenders involved in the heist in which they looted 470 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 19 lakh cash from three lockers and documents from two more lockers of Bikshandarkovil branch of PNB by using gas cutters and by drilling two holes on the rear side wall of the unguarded bank on Sunday night.
The loot, which came to light on Monday morning left police officials baffled as the offenders took away the hard disk of the CCTV footage in the bank with them.
A police officer on condition of anonymity said on Tuesday that they had no clue about the offenders till now. “We are making all out efforts to track them down,” he said.
Since police found 40 sovereigns gold and Rs 1.74 lakh cash left by the offenders outside the bank on Chennai bypass road, the police suspect whether they escaped on the Chennai route. The verification of footage of cameras along all the stretches got underway.
Meanwhile, customers made a beeline to the branch on Tuesday demanding to operate their lockers despite the bank maintaining that only five out of the 400 lockers were targeted in the Sunday night’s heist. Bowing ot pressure, the bank allowed all the customers to check their lockers. The customers also took out their valuables and documents, a bank official said.
The bank administration also undertook repair work to plug the hole made by the burglars on the old wall of the bank building.
