Married woman shamed in public for eloping with lover
Her hair was chopped off and she was made to dance with husband on her shoulders
VADODARA: In a gruesome incident of public humiliation, a 30-year-old married woman’s hair were chopped off and she was beaten up, for allegedly eloping with her paramour in a village of Dahod district.The incident occurred in Radatiya village of the tribal district sometime last week and the videos of public shaming and torture went viral on Whatsapp on Saturday.
The local police also arrested seven people for brutalizing the woman. In the video, the woman is seen wailing for help and pleading with the tormentors to spare her, but a woman chops her braids with some sharp instrument.
The woman was seen begging for mercy and saying that she was duped by her paramour. But her family remained unrelenting and instead, her husband sat on her shoulders and asked her to lift him. She could barely carry his weight but he kept insisting that she dance in front of everyone. The woman kept wailing but none of the locals came forward to help her.
An FIR was registered for assault, confinement, criminal intimidation and violation of Information Technology Act on Saturday. The accused includes the woman’s husband Bharat Mavi, his cousins Rakesh Bhabhor and Rajesh Bhabhor, his aunt Mani Bhabhor and his friends Shailesh Bariya, Dinesh Parmar and Narsinh Mavi.
According to police, the victim had fled with her paramour around two months back to Varamkheda village in the same district. On searching, the in-laws and husband found her from the Varamkheda on January 24.
The woman was brought back to Radatiya village where she was questioned about the places where she and her paramour were hiding for all these months and who supported them. The woman told her husband and other accused that her paramour fooled her and took her away to Ahmedabad and later to Varamkheda village.
Later, Mani was seen beating the woman with bamboo stick and torturing her in public. After chopping her hair, the family members were also seen celebrating. The entire act was shot in three different videos which were circulated widely on Whatsapp.
As the videos reached senior police officials, orders were issued to track down the victim and convince her to give a complaint. Police sources said that with the help of local informers, the woman was identified. “An auto-rickshaw is seen in the video and its registration number helped us in confirming that the video was of Radatiya,” said a police official.
When the police reached out to her, the woman gave a formal complaint all seven accused following which they were arrested. On Sunday, all accused were sent to judicial custody.
Sources said that the woman and Bharat are married for four years and they have a three-year-old son. However, she got involved in a romantic relationship with her paramour some months back.
